    Man’s assortment of racehorse hair sells for £38,000

    A group of greater than 850 samples of hair from racehorses has bought for £38,000.

    Ray Goddard collected hair from the manes and tails of a number of the world’s most well-known racehorses between 1948 and 2004, when he died.

    The gathering comprises locks of hair from Pink Rum, Shergar, Arkle, Nijinsky and different champion thoroughbreds.

    It was bought on the Nationwide Horseracing Museum in Newmarket on Wednesday.

    Northamptonshire-based auctioneer Graham Budd oversaw the public sale and had positioned an estimate of between £40,000 to £50,000 forward of the occasion.

    Mr Budd stated: “Ray Goddard was a lorry driver and had no connections to racing however his ardour was the racehorses.

    “Any spare time he had, he would go round to racehorse stables and search permission to come back away with hair from the tail or mane.

    “He was based mostly close to Studying however travelled all around the nation, Eire, America and France.”

    Some of the well-known horses in Goddard’s assortment is Shergar, who was famously kidnapped in 1983 and by no means seen once more in public.

    It was believed Shergar, who was valued at £10m, was taken by the IRA, which was in need of cash and searching for new sources of funding.

    Mr Budd stated: “He was an incredible horse.

    “He gained the derby in Epson in 1981 by 10 lengths which is the most important margin ever.

    “It’s unimaginable that we have now a chunk of him.

    “He went on to win the King George Race in 1981, which is the day Ray bought his hair.”

    Pink Rum was educated by the profitable Ginger McCain

    Pink Rum gained the Grand Nationwide in 1973, 1974 and 1977 and got here second in 1975 and 1976.

    The Irish champion horse died in 1995 and took half in 100 races throughout its profession.

    “Ray took his hair at Newbury Racecourse Stables on the 15 September 1978,” Mr Budd stated.

    “Pink Rum and Shergar are simply two of absolutely the highlights on this assortment.”
