Godwinson gained the Lincoln Handicap by a nostril in an exhilarating end at Doncaster on the opening day of the 2025 British flat racing season.
Ridden by Cieren Fallon for coach William Haggas, Godwinson (17-2) made a late cost to pip two rivals – Oliver Present (22-1) and Orandi (13-2) – on the road.
In a packed area of twenty-two runners, Oliver Present and Orandi accelerated away from the pack late on and appeared set to battle it out for victory.
However Fallon timed his run to perfection aboard Godwinson to present Haggas his fifth profession winner within the Lincoln and first since Addeybb in 2018.
“We would have positively been unfortunate [if we didn’t win],” profitable jockey Fallon informed ITV Racing.
“He’s a horse that has been working effectively and he is been unfortunate. In the long run, it went in addition to we hoped…
“I all the time knew I used to be going to be very aggressive. It was on the road, he bought his head down.”
Mr Professor, who gained this race in 2024, completed thirteenth.
Earlier at Doncaster, 50-1 shot Pearl Eye gained the Spring Mile Handicap, ridden by Jason Watson for coach Darryll Holland.
Thunder Roar (25-1) was initially given the victory when the 2 crossed the road, however the consequence was later reversed in Pearl Eye’s favour.
